If you Dad is a tool guy, then look into getting the an angle grinder. Good makers are Dewalt, Porter Cable and Bosch. An angle grinder is a very useful tool and one that you'll own for many, many years. Once you've used one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without one. I use mine on an almost daily basis. You can get cutting or grinding wheels for these tools. You can also get a variety of buffing and sanding disc that improves your versatility.
If you need a really useful tool around your shop, give an angle grinder a shot. I think you'll love what you can do with it.
